Gender related issues

Hacer Özel Doğan, Birgül Piyal

While sex is largely assigned at birth, gender refers to an interpretation of sex, characterised by an allocation of socially determined functions and responsibilities. Gender stereotypes created by society do not simply differentiate between men and women, but importantly affect access to

social resources, use of opportunities, distribution of resources and responsibilities. Women face different risks due to gender inequalities at different periods of their lives. Though gender equality is guaranteed by national and international regulations, there is no country in the world where gender equality has yet been fully achieved. However, this inequality is more evident in some regions. Gender inequality is one of the major problems of Turkey. Gender inequality is growing day by day and this regression has a substantial impact on women's daily lives in many respects. In this study, the effects of gender inequality on women's lives were examined through a comparison of countries that implement and do not implement policies based on gender equality. Gender equality and related basic indicators in countries were examined and original tables were created.
